Job Description
The New York Times Company is looking for a Director, Legal Operations, to help lead our daily legal operations. The position is responsible for operational planning and strategy development; financial and budget management; legal technology and process improvement plans; and outside counsel and other vendor management.
This is a hands-on role, and also includes management of a team that includes a Manager, Legal Operations, and a Records Manager. You will report into the Executive Vice President and General Counsel and are an important member of her leadership team.

As Director, Legal Operations, you will help embed these values in the legal function.
Responsibilities:

In coordination with the General Counsel, develop operational plans, strategies and goals for the department, and collaborate with teams and stakeholders to drive department priorities.

Monitor progress and departmental performance through regular reporting on key metrics and related analytics. Leverage reporting to identify issues, trends and gaps and recognize untapped strategic and effectiveness opportunities, and make recommendations to the legal leadership team.

Coordinate preparation of the annual department budget, monitor actual and forecasted spending, and work with Finance to analyze legal expenses. Support senior legal leaders in tracking, managing and optimizing spending practices.

Manage administrative aspects of outside counsel and other vendor engagements in compliance with outside counsel guidelines, outside counsel diversity initiatives, and other applicable company and department policies, including to provide department training. Oversee administration of the e-billing system.

Oversee administration of legal technology both in supporting existing tools and implementing new ones. Apply your expertise in legal enterprise software, tools, and applications, such as e-billing, document management, matter management, and contract lifecycle management technology. Familiar with, and curious about, generative AI legal tools.

Manage daily functions to support successful department operations. Evaluate workflows and implement improvements and standardization. Plan for and facilitate department, attorney, and practice group leadership meetings, events and communications.

Maintain centralized knowledge management resources, including using shared drives and folders to store templates, process summaries and checklists, policies, precedent materials and other documents. Use our intranet and other platforms to promote an understanding of the department and its role, including an overview of lawyers and staff, frequently asked questions, templates and self-service tools. Partner with the legal leadership team to oversee resources to support team member professional development and skill-based training, including formal CLE programming.

Oversee enterprise-wide records management program for all media types designed to organize and preserve business records following the law, regulation and business processes.

Manage the activities of the Legal Operations team, supporting their growth.
Basic Qualifications:

6+ years of experience in a legal department, law firm, or relevant operational management role in positions of progressive responsibility.

3+ years of experience in project management.

Proficiency with Excel (can maintain complex spreadsheets), PowerPoint, Word and Google enterprise tools
Preferred Qualifications:
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $130,000.00 and $165,000.00.
